How is the ERC different from the BRC?

In the Basic Rider Course, a student learns the skills necessary to ride a motorcycle. In the Experienced Rider Course, those existing skills are practiced, refined, and improved. The basic course is structured for a student who has never ridden a motorcycle. The experienced course expects the student to have a minimum of 6 months or 3,000 miles of on road riding.
In the basic course, success is defined by the student achieving specific objectives verified by the RiderCoach. The sessions end with a formal test. In the experienced course, the student defines success by how much his or her skills improve through the practice sessions. There is no formal test.
The experienced rider uses his or her own motorcycle in the course. As with the basic course, many insurance companies offer significant discounts for riders who complete the course, but the experienced course is NOT recognized by the DMV to waive the motorcycle license driving test.

Must I have taken the Basic course first?

While it is not required that you have taken the Basic course, you are required to have all the basic riding skills. The Experienced Rider Course is designed to improve skills. If you have never swerved to avoid an obstacle on the road, or you have never stopped quickly in a curve, or have never executed limited space slow speed maneuvers, then you are not an experienced rider. You should consider taking the basic course before you have to learn these skills the hard way.
This course aims to increase your skills. Increasing your skills through training and practice will increase your riding enjoyment and decrease your chance of a mishap. But successfully completing the course is not a guarantee that you will be safe on the road. Only you can choose the level of safety you wish to maintain.

What does the course cover? How big is each class?

The course covers control at low speed, pause-and-go traffic, offset weaving, overcoming obstacles, stopping quickly, U-turns and S-turns, cornering judgment, cornering finesse, stopping quickly in a curve, swerving for hazard avoidance, and negotiating multiple curves.
Each class consists of no more than 12 students on their own motorcycles, so everyone can get individual coaching and direction.

How long does it take? Is there a test?

The entire course takes approximately 5 hours in one session on the range. Peer discussions between exercises substitute for classroom time. There are no written exercises. There is no riding test at the end.

What do I need?

No refund is given for failing any of these requirements:

  • An unexpired, unrestricted driver license with motorcycle endorsement is required.
  • A STREET LEGAL motorcycle with PROOF OF INSURANCE is required. This motorcycle must be in good working condition, able to pass the "TCLOCS" safety inspection.
  • Mufflers are required. Motorcycles with modified exhaust systems which in the opinion of the RiderCoach are louder than stock exhaust systems will not be permitted. The RiderCoach's opinion is final.
  • A full tank of gas is required. (There is no gas available at the range!)
  • Appropriate riding apparel is required: long, sturdy pants; long sleeve shirt or jacket; over the ankle bone shoes or boots (no sneakers); full fingered leather or equivalent riding gloves.
  • Your own DOT APPROVED HELMET is required and must be worn during all riding sessions. If it does not have a face shield, you will also need glasses or goggles to protect your eyes.
Also note:
  • PASSENGERS ARE NOT PERMITTED.
  • This is a rain or shine course. Enrollment cannot be rescheduled.

How much does it cost? How do I enroll?

The course cost is $125.00 per person, regardless of age. Fees are payable in advance, are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Forms of payment

We accept:

  • personal or bank checks drawn on a US financial institution, traveler's checks, money orders, online billpay, or cash.

Required legal notice: Of course you would not do it intentionally, but if your check is returned for non-payment, a $25 service fee may be added and you may be required to pay with confirmed funds (cashier check or money order).

  • Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express credit cards.

To use a credit card, you may give your card number when you register, but your card will not be charged and your payment is not complete until we receive a charge authorization from you. After you have your student id number, please go to the Charge Authorization page and complete the form.
See the FAQ: Why is a "charge authorization" necessary to pay by credit card? for more information.

Whichever form of payment you choose, your reserved class seat is not confirmed until we receive payment. We must receive your payment within 5 business days from the telephone reservation, or your seat will be released to the next waiting person. A confirmation letter will be mailed to you when your payment is received. Late payments may be refused or may cause your reservation to be delayed until the next class opens for scheduling. Once you make that reservation, send the payment in!
