BRC Skills Practice  -or-  BRC Formal Remediation
conducted ONLY IN SAN FRANCISCO

These are two different courses!
Skills Practice
Formal Remediation

Basic Rider Course (BRC) Skills Practice

The Basic Rider Course (BRC) Skills Practice session is intended to extend, reinforce, or renew riding skills for students who have recently graduated from a BRC. "Recently" may mean within the last few months and you just want some more saddle time before you buy your own bike. Or "recently" may mean six months ago and you need to brush up on your skills before you get on the road again.
This is a single riding session which repeats the Range 2 portion of the BRC, covering: control at low speed, overcoming obstacles, stopping quickly, U-turns and S-turns, cornering judgment, cornering finesse, stopping quickly in a curve, swerving for hazard avoidance.
There are two options for participating in the BRC Skills Practice - separate or stand-by:

  • Separate scheduled groups can be arranged for 6 students, based on demand. If you want to wait for the next "separate" Skills Practice, the office keeps a manual waiting list. (Skills Practice sessions do not appear on the Schedule Calendar web page.)
  • To stand-by, after pre-registering and paying, you can drop by the riding area any Sunday and see if there is an open seat in a regular BRC Range 2. You may choose whether to take the Skills Evaluation riding test at the end of the session. (You do not get another certificate for passing the test, and there is no penalty for not passing. It is just more practice.)

To sign up for BRC Skills Practice, you must:

  • Have a motorcycle endorsement on your current unexpired and unrestricted license.
  • Call the office to register and pay in advance. The fee is:
    • $100 if you use your own motorcycle or scooter in the course. (Your bike must be under 500 cc, must be registered, must be insured, and must pass T-CLOCS pre-ride inspection.)
    • $125 if you use one of our motorcycles.

Must I have taken the Basic course first?

No. Although the BRC Skills Practice is intended to provide additional riding for students who passed the BRC, any licensed rider with equivalent skills may participate.

Basic Rider Course (BRC) Formal Remediation

The Basic Rider Course (BRC) Formal Remediation session is intended to offer students who completed but did not pass a Basic Rider Course an opportunity for private, personal coaching to prepare to repeat the Basic Rider Course. (BRC students are allowed two attempts in the regular course. If they fail both attempts, they must pay the entire fee and begin again from the beginning.)
This is an intensive repetition of exercises from Range 1 in a small group on a separate range under closer individual supervision of a RiderCoach. The exercises will focus more on the primary skills of balance, clutch control, stability, stopping, and shifting from Range 1.

After successfully completing the Formal Remediation exercises, you will be fully prepared to restart the BRC, and you will receive priority scheduling if you re-register within one month from your Formal Remediation. Students who gain enough proficiency with Formal Remediation may re-enter Range 2 of a regular BRC. Students who qualify to re-enter at Range 2 may pay a reduced rate. Re-entry at Range 1 requires the full course fee. A repeat of BRC classroom, if already completed, is not necessary. Formal remediation alone does not meet the requirements for a student to earn a DMV DL-389 certificate. Formal Remediation does not replace any portion of the BRC – you must still complete the entire BRC to receive a DMV DL-389 certificate.

Scheduled groups can be arranged for 6 students, based on demand. If you want to wait for the next Formal Remediation, the office keeps a manual waiting list. (Formal Remediation sessions do not appear on the Schedule Calendar web page.)

To sign up for BRC Formal Remediation, you must:

  • Have recently completed but not passed a Basic Rider Course.
  • Call the office to register and pay in advance. The fee is $165.

Must I have taken the Basic course first?

Yes. The BRC Formal Remediation session requires you have completed the Basic Rider Course. Remediation is for students who completed but did not pass the BRC.

Must I take the Basic course after?

You must successfully complete the entire BRC if you want to receive a DMV DL-389 certificate. You are not required to repeat the BRC, but if you do not you will not receive a certificate.
