CMSP and Bay Area Motorcycle Training requirements

Legal requirements

     Because this course is presented under contract to the California Motorcyclist Safety Program (CMSP), minimal requirements MUST be met before a student may attend any part of the course. Please note ... where the word "must" is used, it means no exceptions!

  • Photo: Coaches Charlie and Debra prepare for a class You must be in good health and must be able to balance a two-wheeled vehicle (such as a bicycle).
  • You must be at least 15 years and 6 months old as of the starting day of the class.
  • If you are under 18 years old, a parent or legal guardian must be present at the start of the first classroom session to sign documents. This person must provide identification (driver license, court papers, etc.) establishing his or her relation to you.
  • You must bring one of the following documents to the first session (only one is necessary):
    • driver license from any US State or territory which is valid (unexpired and unrestricted) through the ENTIRE course,
    • CALIFORNIA DMV learner permit which is valid (unexpired and unrestricted) through the ENTIRE course,
    • Driver Education Certificate from a CALIFORNIA school.
CMSP and Bay Area Motorcycle Training requirements
  • All sessions are taught in English. Reading and oral comprehension of English is required to participate in the classes. Understanding verbal commands is necessary to maintain safety for all students on the range.
  • You must register for a course before attending the first session. "Walk in" students are not accepted.
  • You must pay for the course in full before attending the first session. (See the Course Cost page for more information.)Photo: Coach Tony gives directions for a lesson
  • You must attend and complete all classroom and range modules. If you arrive or return late and a module or exercise has already started, you may not be allowed to join in a lesson already in progress. You will be asked to reschedule for another course and will have to repeat from the beginning of that session. You may reschedule for another course within six months of the original reservation. You might be required to pay an additional rebooking fee. (See the FAQ: How Do I Get Into Another Course for more information.)
  • You must pass the written knowledge evaluation at the end of the Classroom session. You must pass the riding skill evaluation at the end of Range 2 to graduate.
  • You must provide your own appropriate clothing for the riding sessions. (See the What to bring page for more information.)
And lastly, please bring a pen to the classroom session! Registration forms and the written knowledge evaluation must be completed in ink. You may also wish to bring paper for taking notes in the classroom.
